WHERE DID STAND UP PADDLING START?

Ships Artist, John Webber, accompanied Captain James Cook to The Sandwich Islands in 1778, and in the lower left foreground of his 1781 engraving is depicted a Paddleboarder/Surfer Rider.

Stand up paddling (SUP) has been practiced in one form or another since the inception of surfing in Hawaii. Surf instructors have often used the stand up position to keep an eye on their clients. Laird Hamilton is one of the iconic surfers attributed with bring SUP into a category of its own when he used SUP boards to access waves out of reach of prone paddling surfers.

Stand up paddleboarding (SUP) offers a fun, relaxing way to play on the water. With a minimum of gear, you can paddle ocean surf, lakes and rivers—no waves required.

SUP delivers a full body workout and thus has become a popular cross-training activity. And since you stand at your full height, you can enjoy unique views of everything from sea creatures to what's on the horizon.

Where can I paddle in La Coruña?

For starters, let’s say that anywhere you can paddle a kayak or canoe, you can paddle a SUP board. In La Coruña this includes La Ria del Burgo and Santa Cristina Beach mainly. Surf zones and beaches are great places to paddle, too. A stand up paddleboard has the great advantage of being light and easy to transport, so you can easily access water that boats can’t.
